Twenty-first century evangelists and missionaries face a vastly different world to that of the early church. In the realms of communication and technology, the changes are immense. And in the eyes of many church-growth proponents, those advances have left the Bible looking older than ever. They see a need for new witnessing methods and greater cultural awareness in order to reach the sophisticated, modern sinner. Today’s evangelistic innovators may still affirm the sufficiency of Scripture but, for all practical purposes, the it falls by the wayside due to the demand for new methodologies.
So how should we approach the Great Commission today? Is Scripture still sufficient—are its truths still applicable? Or does our ever-changing world demand some adjustments to meet the new challenges it poses? We recently asked Phil Johnson about the sufficiency of Scripture and its implications for modern missionary efforts. Here’s what he had to say:
Clearly, a lot is at stake when any believer starts to waver on biblical sufficiency. That is a major reason why next week’s Truth Matters conference has the sufficiency of Scripture as its central theme.
