Roman Catholicism bears no legitimate resemblance to true Christianity. Beneath all the priestly pomp and grand religiosity lies a wasteland of damnable error. This series has exposed some of the major heresies of the Roman Catholic Church. And as we’ve seen, their false teaching is no less dangerous today than it was five hundred years ago.
We should be grateful for the Reformers’ accomplishments—they recovered precious biblical doctrines, and many of them died defending those essential gospel truths. But our response should go beyond mere remembrance. We recently asked John MacArthur how those lessons from the past should influence the true church today. Here’s what he had to say:
To downplay the significance of the Protestant Reformation is to undermine everything it accomplished. The willingness of Reformers like Luther, Calvin, Tyndale, and Knox to fight those heresies has left us a legacy for which we should be deeply thankful. Moreover, their willingness to oppose the damnable errors of Rome must be emulated by God’s people today. The Protestant faith was—and still is—built upon that necessary protest. There remains no place for ecumenical compromise, cowardice, or capitulation among God’s people.
